Payroll tax filing
Where responsibility actually sits
A payroll service calculates your payroll taxes, makes the deposits and files the returns. That is real work and it is most of the burden. What it does not do is move the legal obligation off the employer.
Under an ordinary payroll service arrangement, the employer generally remains responsible for its payroll tax obligations. We will tell you this plainly rather than leaving it in a footnote, because a provider who blurs it is setting you up for an unpleasant surprise later.
What you should expect from us instead is that the work is done on time, that you can see it was done, and that when something needs sorting out there is a person handling it rather than a queue.
What the filing work involves
Calculation each pay run
Federal, Vermont and any other applicable withholding and employer taxes, calculated as part of preparing the payroll rather than reconstructed afterwards.
Deposits on your schedule
Deposit frequency is set by your liability history and can change year to year. Tracking that is our job, not something you should have to diarise.
Periodic returns
Quarterly and annual returns prepared and filed within the scope of your agreement.
Year-end forms
Annual employee forms produced and filed, with the reconciliation done before the year closes so January is uneventful.
Check it at the source
We would rather you verify this than take our word for it. These are the official sources for federal and Vermont employer payroll tax requirements.
